A little explanation about terms commonly used in the novel

  • QiYou’re probably familiar with this term if you read Chinese fantasy novels. Simply put it is an invisible energy. For example sword qi would be an invisible energy shaped into a sword, and/or possessing sword-like properties.
  • Spirit: As explained by the novel, anything (rock, cloud, water, etc) can be worshiped, and if worshiped long enough it’ll become a spirit that possesses supernatural powers. Think shamanistic religions. This is different from the metaphysical spirit of a man, which is roughly called “mind” in this novel by your beloved translator.
  • Totem and totem patterns: In the novel, a totem, or totem spirit, is a spirit worshiped by groups of people. While not yet explained in the novel, a totem pattern is presumably a pattern drawing (picture repeated runes or symbols) that can presumably borrow power from the totem spirit.
  • Visualization: This is a buddhist term. Here it means either picturing things in your mind (as a form of cultivation for example) or manifesting the picture into reality, first as a virtual image, then becoming more real when your mind becomes more powerful.
  • Light: A light is either a visual representation of energy, like qi, or thunder, etc. Often in a beam form. Or when talking about weapons it’s simply the metallic glint and Chinese authors prefer talking about the ‘light’ rather than the weapon itself because it’s too mundane or something >.<

Characters so far (Some spoilers):

(Please note that I’m not hinting at anything, trolling at most)

Zhong Yue: Our MC. He looks like an MC and even does MC things. Right now he’s a nobody outer disciple in the Sword Sect.

Xin Huo: A finger sized fire guy our MC found in a lamp. He came from ages ago and is searching for someone who can inherit the Soul Fire. Looks like our MC’s (first) cheat?!

Shui Qingyan: A girl a bit younger than our MC. MC once saved her life and they were pretty close. Her body’s been occupied by the Celestial Elephant Old Mother and her soul is presumably dead.

Zuo Xiangsheng: An examiner who helped our MC during a test. Comes from a poor family and wants to help the poor disciples. Looks like a pretty swell and awe-inspiring guy.

Villains

Celestial Elephant Old Mother: A demon god of the Great Wilderness, her spirit was revived inside the demon ruins and she’s taken over Shui Qingyan’s body.

Chinese mythology figures:

(The links will bring you to their Wiki page)

Fuxi: Emperor of China said to have created humans. In this novel he’s been transformed into a whole godly race who reigned over the heavens and earth.

Sovereign Sui: Suiren Emperor of China before Fuxi, said to have created fire. In this novel he’s become a celestial emperor with a dragon head and snake tail instead of legs.

Hebo: God of the Yellow River in Chinese mythology. He’s a spirit with a fish tail instead of legs in this novel and is the totem spirit of the River Mud clan
